Prof. Hilary Palevsky (she/her)

Hilary is an Assistant Professor in the Boston College Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Before coming to BC, she was a Lecturer at Wellesley College, a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and received her PhD in Oceanography and a graduate certificate in Climate Science at the University of Washington. Prior to beginning her graduate studies, she earned a B.A. in Geology from Amherst College, spent a year studying North Atlantic cod fisheries as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow and taught marine science on traditionally-rigged schooners in Long Island Sound. [Full CV]

Dr. Kristen Fogaren (she/her), Senior Research Associate

Kristen’s current research investigates biogeochemical cycles in the subpolar North Atlantic and a mid-Atlantic salt marsh using ocean observing assets. Prior to joining our group, Kristen received her M.S. and PhD from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she studied the effects of surface wave events on oxygen and nutrient dynamics in nearshore permeable sediments. Kristen then completed a postdoctoral position at Oregon State University investigating the role of sediments in the development of seasonal hypoxia on the Oregon shelf. Kristen is an alumna of Boston College, where she earned a B.S. in Geology.

Dr. Emily Chua (she/her), Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Emily’s current research investigates salt marsh biogeochemical cycling and water quality, both in terms of natural variability and responses to episodic events. Prior to joining our group, Emily completed her PhD at Boston University, where she developed a novel underwater mass spectrometer-based instrument to measure dissolved gases in coastal sediments, and then taught full-time in our department for a year as a Visiting Assistant Professor. See Emily’s personal website to learn more.

Meg Yoder (she/her), PhD Student

Meg’s PhD research investigates the drivers of inorganic carbon cycling in the subpolar North Atlantic. As a PhD student, she has led our research group’s participation in two open ocean cruises, mentored and taught undergraduate students in the lab and as a teaching assistant, and serves on the Executive Committee of the Graduate Climate Conference. Meg received her BA in Geology from Colby College.

Jake Supino (he/him), PhD Student

Jake’s PhD research investigates ecosystem metabolism, and its role in carbon and oxygen cycling, in tidal wetlands. As a PhD student, he has spent nearly four months conducting field work in a to deploy, maintain, and calibrate autonomous biogeochemical sensors. Prior to attending Boston College, he received his B.A. from New York University and his M.S. from The City University of New York at City College.

Yasmin Hamilton (she/they), Postbaccalaureate Research Assistant

Yasmin spends most of her time in the lab running samples on the DIC analyzer and the alkalinity titrator. Prior to coming to BC, Yasmin finished her B.A. in Geology at Amherst College.

Yoleimy Lopez Barias (she/her), Undergraduate Research Assistant

Emma Brown (she/her), Undergraduate Research Assistant

Research Group Alumni

Jose Cuevas (they/he), MS ‘2024

Jose’s MS thesis quantified particulate organic carbon flux in the subpolar North Atlantic using bio-optical data from the OOI's Global Irminger Sea Array. While at Boston College, Jose also contributed to science outreach efforts for several research cruises, and developed a robust skillset focused on bringing science to the public. Jose is currently employed at the Museum of Science, Boston.

Stevie Walker (they/them), BS ‘2021

Stevie joined our research group as an undergraduate senior thesis student, and then continued to work in the lab as a postbaccalaureate research assistant for two years before moving on to begin their PhD studies in the University of Washington School of Oceanography in 2023. Stevie’s research at BC investigated future projections of the ocean’s biological carbon pump under climate change in global Earth System Models.
